Each year one Sunday in January is designated as Sanctity of Human Life Sunday (SOHLS). On and around this day, many churches and other organizations sponsor activities and events to focus on the intrinsic value of human life and the fundamental right to life. The day is scheduled in connection with the January 22 anniversary of the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton decisions, which were handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1973. In honor of Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, here are three books that honor life.

New Book Recounts Dramatic POW/MIA Story

On September 16, 2011, the nation will honor the more than 83,000 Americans who are missing from World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War and the 1991 Gulf War, as well as the countless American men and women who were captured as prisoners of war.

A new book, Left Alive to Die, tells the story of one such American: legendary naval aviator CAPT Harley Hall. Flying a crucial mission hours before the 1973 Vietnam War cease-fire, CAPT Hall was shot down above the Cua Viet River. Hall’s wingman and other squadron members watched while he safely parachuted to the ground. They were unaware that was the last time they would see or hear from Hall again.

At age 32 Hall was the youngest person in the Navy at that time with the rank of commander. In 1969 he achieved his lifelong dream as he became commanding officer of the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy Precision Demonstration squadron. Not only was he an outstanding military officer, Hall was also a dedicated husband and father, an inspirational leader, a loving friend and a man of faith.

Left Alive to Die is written by Susan Keen, the wife of Jack Keen, M.D., LCDR, the U.S. Navy flight surgeon responsible for providing care to CAPT Hall’s Blue Angels team and the families. The book is a dramatic retelling of the romance of Mary Lou Marino and Hall, their marriage and life together and the tragedy of Hall’s disappearance. Readers will be captivated by details of Hall’s Navy experience, Mary Lou’s courageous life as a military wife and her years of searching for answers about Hall’s whereabouts.

In another exciting expansion Hannibal Books and CrossHouse Publishing have begun to release their books in digital versions available through Amazon's Kindle and Barnes & Noble's Nook, as well as many other popular e-reader applications.

Throughout the past few years the digital book industry has exploded. According to the Association of American Publishers, the industry's national trade organization, growth still is occurring at an incredible rate. The AAP's report states that digital formats of books saw revenue gains of 145.7 percent in March 2011 versus March 2010.

We saw this as another fantastic opportunity for authors to reach an even broader spectrum of readers. As soon as its print version is released, every new book will be available as an e-book. Recent industry reports also indicate that this growth does not mean print books are obsolete. Bowker, the global leader in bibliographic information, released its annual report that states that in 2010, traditional U.S. print titles increased output by five percent after a four-percent increase the previous year. CrossHouse, the self-publishing division of KLMK Communications, has added numerous English-language books to its collection since its inception in 2003. Dr. Katie Welch, publisher of CrossHouse, saw this Spanish-language division as a natural fit with the company's goals. Many authors who have worked either with CrossHouse or Hannibal Books, KLMK's traditional publishing division, have served as missionaries in Spanish-speaking countries and desire to have their books published in Spanish. The 1930s were very difficult years for Christians in the lands of Russia. Thousands laid down their lives for their faith. Among these was Georgy (pron: Gay-or-ghee) Slesarev, first violinist of Moscow's prestigious Bolshoi Theater Orchestra.

They Could Not Stop the Music is the story of one believer who, rather than choosing to hide his faith and make life easy for himself, his wife and two children, chose to let his light shine in the midst of one of the darkest periods in history when being a witness meant, more often than not, martyrdom. But for this servant of Christ, hiding his faith was never an option because he saw his position in the world-renowned musical body as a direct assignment from God. He had been placed there to be His witness, which eventually led to Georgy's arrest and confinement in a Siberian Gulag.

The twist in Georgy's story, however, is sparked by the opportunity he was given to return to his position with the orchestra and to his family. The condition: He would have to sign a document promising never to share about Christ again. Even though Georgy refused to sign the document and was subsequently executed, they tried but they could not stop the music.

Nearly a year-and-a-half ago I wrote in this column about some of the amazing changes sweeping the book-publishing industry--in particular the dramatic move from traditional to self-publishing models. Much of the push toward this new model was linked to a desire on the part of authors to avoid the traditional "sieve" for manuscripts which limited the number of new books published each year, the interest of authors in controlling the end results of their books, decreasing costs, increased distribution opportunities and a book-price war between major retailers.

Since I last addressed the topic, the self-publishing industry has continued to thrive, especially with the expansion of the e-book market and continued dramatic increase toward online book sales.

Both the New York Times and Time magazine as well as most major newspapers and other media have run articles noting the historic shift and calling the triumph of self-publishing over the traditional model a revolution of monumental proportions.

Now, nearly eight years since we started our own self-publishing imprint, CrossHouse Publishing, we are proud to announce a new website dedicated solely to our self-published books: CrossHouse Books. The site resembles the original Hannibal Books' site--which will continue to offer the books published traditionally--so navigation will be familiar for those who have visited our site in the past.

Readers today have many different options for digesting books. Of course, at the moment, the traditional paper version remains supreme, but sales and research indicate this is changing rapidly-- how fast depends on who you ask.

Much of the discussion involves i-Pads and E-readers, but a whole different dimension is involved, too. Authors are taking to the Internet to promote their books through their own websites and blogs, as well as through Facebook accounts, YouTube productions, blogs, and so forth.

Kay Wheeler Moore's new blog, The Newfangled Country Gardener, is an example of what Hannibal Books and CrossHouse Publishing are encouraging their authors to do. We are telling our authors to expand their horizons and look for creative ways to engage their readers. Kay, author of Way Back in the Country Garden, is exemplifying this: her delightful recipe book provides the core from which the blog expounds.

Typically updated five days a week, The Newfangled Country Gardener provides photos and descriptions of recipes, tips on gardening, and insights into eating healthy. Recipes such as Skillet Gnocchi with Spinach and White Beans, "Big-Easy" Gumbo, Mediterranean Chicken Salad, and Praline-Pecan French Toast not only tantalize the taste buds but recommend essential nutrients to staying healthy.

The blog was inspired by Kay's newest book, Way Back in the Country Garden, which features six generations of recipes that call for fresh-from-the-garden ingredients. Included are fascinating stories centering around the Three Red-Haired Miller Girls (Kay's mother and aunts), who grew up in Delta County, TX, with their own backyard garden so lavish that they felt as though they were royalty after their Mama wielded her kitchen magic on all that was homegrown. Way Back in the Country Garden was the sequel to Way Back in the Country, Kay's first recipe book published in 2002.

If so, you may be interested to know this month is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). The goal of the 30-day event is for each person to write a 50,000-word novel by the end of the month. The official website purports that the goal is for quantity, not quality, to help people get past the challenge of actually getting words down on paper (or computer screen, whatever happens to be the case).

The website does offer a warning to its "kamikaze" style of writing: "Make no mistake: You will be writing a lot of crap. And that's a good thing. By forcing yourself to write so intensely, you are giving yourself permission to make mistakes. To forgo the endless tweaking and editing and just create. To build without tearing down."

The NaNoWriMo website offers a place to sign up to participate (for free, of course) in the challenge and has forums and blogs to keep you connected to other writers taking the same challenge.

Iris Urrey was raised in a middle-class Christian home, but she was rebellious almost from the start. Running away at the age of thirteen, she became involved with drugs and prostitution, and at seventeen was arrested for armed robbery. Most people in their 50s wouldn’t even think of moving to a remote area of a foreign country with only minimal language skills. Retirement, relaxation, and enjoying grandchildren would be on most people’s minds.

However, Van and Paula Edwards left the comforts of their home, their church, and their culture and set out on a missionary adventure in Brazil, as described in the new book, Misadventures in Travel: A Misadventures in Travel.

The book, by Paula Edwards, is a collection of stories from her and her husband’s three years in Brazil, during which they studied the language, traveled the coastline in search of villages that needed a Baptist church, and helped plant churches in Minas Gerais.

Often, Van and Paula stumbled upon surprisingly pleasant pousadas (lodging) and came across fellow believers whose unbridled joy in the Lord motivated this American couple to push on so all Brazilians in these remote areas might know Jesus.

OK, I'll admit it. I had an ulterior motive.

Naturally, I scheduled my book-signing this past weekend in Delta County because I needed to launch my book there--the setting for Way Back in the Country Garden--the place in which the main characters, The Three Little Red-Haired Miller Girls, grew up.

Eight years ago, when I launched my first book, Way Back in the Country, the prequel to the new one, we had a fantastic party on the Cooper square at a gift shop there. It was a fitting way to kick off my new book in the locale in which the book's events happened. Of course we'd want to do it all over again in 2010 with the birth of the new title.

Debbie Grider and the folks at The Prairie Rose Flowers & Gifts, Cooper's dynamite new shop right in front of the Delta County Courthouse, were thrilled to be hosts for the 2010 launch. On Saturday they extended wonderful hospitality and gave us a great place to serve cookies made from recipes out of the new book (and Sparkling Holiday Punch from Way Back in the Country).

But truthfully, my sub-reason for heading to Cooper this pa st weekend went well beyond that of any book promotion...

New Book Looks at Backyard Gardens and Homespun Cooking

With the Great Recession prompting many to till their yards to produce food for the family’s mealtimes, a new book, Way Back in the Country Garden, reminisces about days in which our forebears relied almost totally on the family garden instead of the convenient grocery store.

The book, by Kay Wheeler Moore, is a blend of stories about six generations of a family and their recipes developed from the food that is home-grown.

Way Back in the Country Garden is a sequel to Moore’s popular Way Back in the Country, published in 2002. That book encouraged people not only to preserve their families’ legendary recipes but also to preserve the lore about the people who popularized these recipes within a family.

As with the previous book, Moore tells the stories through the lives of the Three Red-Haired Miller Girls (her mother and two aunts), who grew up in farm-rich Delta County, TX, (in East Texas between Commerce and Paris), as well as through the generations surrounding them.

A Bruised Reed is based on bites of information about the life of Lucey Hanks, Abraham Lincoln’s grandmother. This work is not intended as a biography, since so little is known about Hanks’ life. Not even her size, attributes, or hair color found agreement among historians. However, the story that can be pieced together from these historical bites gives a beautiful revelation of how deeply God loves His children and works through circumstances and persons to bring them to Himself.

The author, Helen Stephenson Spaulding, is eighth cousin to Abraham Lincoln. Because of a challenge to prove the relationship, much research was done into Lincoln’s relatives, especially his grandmother, Lucey Hanks. During this research, the gaps in Hanks' life were intriguing. What changed a young, rebellious, unwed mother—indicted for “unbecoming behavior”—to a married mother of eight more children, of whom two became ministers of the gospel and all the rest were active, deeply committed Christians? It was a story that begged to be written! (A few years ago, some interested persons worked hard to have the indictment expunged from Hanks' legal record.)

Some parts of this work are historically accurate. Others could have happened, given the actual history of that time. For instance, the massacre of Christian Dakota Indians did occur in 1782; the survivors did migrate south. Fictional events were woven into these historical parts to carry forward the theme.

Hannibal Author Posts Blog About Southern Baptists in Haiti

In a post on his blog, Louis Moore on Religion, Hannibal author Louis Moore proposed that Southern Baptist Convention leaders should step forward and take responsibility for preaching the message to 'go'. This is in connection to the 10 Southern Baptists who are in legal trouble in Haiti after they went to the country without training or legal preparation and now face charges for trying to cross the border with children who had no documentation.

In his post, Louis--who was the religion editor for the Houston Chronicle for nearly 15 years--says this kind of legal incident is by no means rare and that SBC leaders should accept responsibility for their fervent insistence that church members 'go' to share the gospel, but who don't always provide the proper training for these 'independent' missions.

Author's Mother, Contributor to Naylor Biography Passed Away

Goldia was the source of much information in Dr. Naylor's biography and was quoted extensively. Rebekah came home from the mission field to care for Goldia.

Hannibal Author Discusses His Personal Spiritual Warfare

For centuries, many evangelicals have described themselves as spiritual warriors. The church often promotes this idea as a purpose and goal of a Christian. Stories of fighting unseen demons and Satan’s attacks have even been made into popular movies and books.

While the intentions behind this perspective are usually good, the belief that Christians are spiritual warriors designed to fight for and defend the cause of Christ is misplaced. In Ambassadors on Mission: The Priority of Prayer and Proclamation, veteran author Dan R. Crawford explains that Christians are actually ambassadors, not warriors. He says believers are designed to withstand Satan’s attacks—not to actively fight—while representing Christ in everyday situations.

Dr. Crawford first begins his look into the ambassadorship of Christians by examining why the image of a warrior does not fit with the Christian model. He explains that while Christians are not designed to seek and destroy Satan—because Jesus has already defeated Satan—Christians will get caught in the crossfire and must know how to withstand attacks.

Through the remaining chapters of Ambassadors on Mission, Dr. Crawford takes an insightful journey through Ephesians 6:10-20. This passage, which lists the spiritual armor a Christian should use, is often thought to promote the role of a warrior. However, as Dr. Crawford examines each phrase as well as the overall message in the chapter, he quickly shows that the essence is one of prayer and proclamation to stand against spiritual warfare.

His step-by-step walk through the Scripture in Ephesians 6 also includes an explanation of some of Satan’s strategies, as well as what methods Christians should employ as ambassadors of the Truth. Dr. Crawford’s personal stories of spiritual warfare and his down-to-earth commentary on spiritual warfare in the 21st century provide a firm foundation for believers to achieve God’s mission as ambassadors.

What was God thinking when He created man?

On Friday, October 23, as part of Baylor University Homecoming, Louis and Kay Moore were asked to speak to Dr. Doug Ferdon's journalism ethics class. Louis spoke on several issues addressed in his book, Witness to the Truth. Dr. Ferdon gave students a class assignment that related to one of the book's chapters. Former Missionary Kid Examines Childhood Struggles, Worthiness of Missions

Thousands of children of Christian workers in each generation spend a significant part of their developmental years outside their parents culture of origin—often in more than one location and all in the name of serving as Christian missionaries.

The parents believe they are doing God’s will, but what about the hardships that these missionary kids face? Is the cause really worth the price that these kids pay? In a frank and honest look inside the life of one missionary kid, Mary Anne Phemister tells her unusual story in Lessons from a Broken Chopstick: A memoir of a peculiar childhood.

Born to American parents during a World War II Japanese air raid in China, Mary Anne’s life started off drastically different than do the lives of most Americans. Like many parents who are on mission with God in a foreign land, Mary Anne Phemister’s father was resolute in his zeal to lead the lost people of China and later Vietnam, Cambodia and Taiwan out of spiritual darkness. So, as required by their mission organization, by the time Mary Anne was 4-years old her parents sent her off to the first of three boarding schools. During the few years she was with her parents, Mary Anne remembers a strict household with a strained relationship between her mother and dad.

Through Lessons from a Broken Chopstick, Mary Anne discusses her interesting life experiences, confusing feelings and difficult circumstances and also talks about her visits as an adult back to China, Vietnam and Hong Kong. With amazing sensitivity, insight, forgiveness and even humor she delves into the various issues she and her siblings encountered in their unusual lives. Amid her stories of playing with pet turkeys, evacuating from the communist regime and getting a new hairdo for the American school, Mary Anne divulges her deeper issues of identity crisis, moments of self-actualization and her struggle to understand why her parents lived as they did.

Life offers many choices, so we're pleased to report that a key player in our publishing companies has just been rewarded for making some eminently sound ones.

Katie Welch, who is the publisher of Hannibal Books' sister company, CrossHouse Publishing, has just received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. For Katie this effort represents 25 years of schooling without a break in stride!

After high-school graduation she graduated summa cum laude in 3 1/2 years from Baylor University with a bachelor of arts degree and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She did her master's work at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Dallas Baptist University.

Her doctorate, awarded Aug. 15 at UTA, was in the field of linguistics. A Spanish scholar, her dissertation focused on the process by which students learn politeness terms as they acquire proficiency in a foreign language.

All this was occurring while Katie worked to give a high degree of individualized attention to countless authors at CrossHouse Publishing and coordinated numerous Hannibal special events such as the annual Mark Twain School for Authors.and exhibits at the Christian Booksellers Association convention.

With this part of her academic career behind her, Katie will continue as CrossHouse Publisher plus will absorb more of the day-to-day operations of Hannibal Books. She has a strong interest in developing Spanish curriculum as an offering through Hannibal/CrossHouse. We believe she will add a special way of relating to a new generation of younger, potential authors who desire to see themselves in print.
